Plant Ecology Group

Ecology is the study of the interaction between organisms and their environment. Understanding the forces that regulate these interactions is becoming ever more important as ecosystems are challenged by global environmental change.

The Plant Ecology group at ETH, headed by Professor Janneke Hille Ris Lambers, comprises two groups led by Prof. Hille Ris Lambers and Dr. Alexander. The groups collaborate closely on research projects, teaching, and day-to-day operations (e.g. lab meetings), but also pursue their own research avenues and personnel. Both groups merge field studies, manipulative experiments and mathematical theory to tackle topics in plant ecology including community assembly, responses to climate change, invasion biology, and phenology. Our teaching goals are to challenge students to move from a theoretical understanding of ecological processes to their application in the conservation and management of plant communities. Our research groups are committed to fostering diversity and inclusivity in all our activities, as well as in conducting open and collaborative science.
